NYSAFC Releases Updated Fire Chief’s Reference Guide

The revised guide in PDF format will be provided to all association Department Member agencies in February.

The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs is pleased to announce release of the updated NYSAFC Fire Chief's Reference Guide. Originally published in the 1990s, the guide was last revised in 2012. The 2025 edition will be provided in PDF format on USB flash drive to all association Department Member agencies in February 2026.

The NYSAFC Volunteer Chiefs Committee, led by past Chairman Otto Kohlmier and current Chairman William Maloney, spent significant time reviewing the previous edition, compiling timely and practical information for inclusion in the updated document, and coordinating the revision project. Many of our other association committee members, past and present, contributed their knowledge and expertise toward completion of this document. We thank them all for their work.

Significant updates include guidelines for firefighter and fire officer qualifications, a new chapter on firefighter wellness, and more information for managing and coping with a firefighter line of duty injury or death, as well as an expanded references and resources section to help fire chiefs locate information to assist them in day-to-day operations.

Questions about the guide can be emailed to NYSAFC. Learn more about the other benefits of association Department Membership here.
