This course provides basic fire commissioner training by examining the authority and responsibilities of fire district commissioners. Class participation with group discussion is emphasized, and illustration of fire district problems engages all participants and makes the material practical and meaningful. The course is presented by two of the leading fire service attorneys in New York, with extensive experience representing fire districts and training fire district commissioners. The course meets and exceeds the requirements of Town Law 176-e, is approved by the New York state comptroller, and satisfies fire commissioner training requirements for those required to complete training within 270 days of election or appointment. Designed for fire commissioners, fire district secretaries, and treasurers, fire chiefs are also encouraged to attend.
Thursday, June 13, 2024 – 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Registration Fee: $75 per person – Includes breakfast and three One Day Tickets for the FIRE 2024 Expo (valid June 13-15)
This lively, interactive course addresses the unique legal and practical relationship between the fire chief and a fire district board of fire commissioners. The course will examine the development and implementation of policies, procurement, and making practical sense of the legal requirements for buying everything from gloves to apparatus, the fire district budgeting process and how to guide it for favorable operational results, membership challenges and the disciplinary process, and having a greater impact on fire district elections. Attorneys Mark Butler and Terry Hannigan will use real-life examples for each subject, including practical considerations.
