As recently announced by PESH, OSHA is in the process of proposing to issue a new safety and health standard, titled Emergency Response, to replace the existing Fire Brigades (1910.156) Standard that was published in 1980. The focus of the proposed rule is to provide basic workplace protection for workers who respond to emergencies as part of their regularly assigned duties. The new standard would address a broader scope of emergency responders - firefighting, emergency medical service, and technical search and rescue - and would include programmatic elements to protect emergency responders from a variety of occupational hazards.
The proposed standard is available here.
NYSAFC is encouraging all members to review and comment on the OSHA proposal. Comments are due to OSHA by May 6, 2024. Use this link to submit your comments, clicking on the green “submit a formal comment” button.
PESH encourages stakeholders to share their concerns with its Fire Protection Strategic Plan group here. Statewide agency concerns will factor into PESH's response to OSHA.
The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York recently held an informational webinar that can be viewed here. AFDSNY has also set up an informational website for OSHA 190.156 with links to many documents and resources.
