NYSAFC 2025 Seminar Series “Short-Handed Firefighting”
with Past Chief/Coordinator of Education Mike Healy (Central Nyack F.D./Rockland Co.)

& Firefighter/Instructor Jeff Daniels (FDNY/Rockland Co.)
Three-Hour Seminar

34 years ago, this class was developed by Firefighter Andrew A. Fredericks. At that time, the fire service was starting to suffer from a shortage of members, especially but not limited to the volunteer ranks. Today, as we all know, departments across the nation have experienced a large drop-off in membership. With today’s hotter, faster-moving fires, it is imperative that we get on the road ASAP and are ready to mount an aggressive interior attack – especially where life-saving attempts must be carried out. This class will look at new apparatus and equipment designed to make our jobs less labor-intensive. In many places, where it used to take one or maybe two departments to handle the job at a single-family residence, now up to six departments are necessary due our diminished ranks. We must protect our residents and, just as important, our members and make sure everyone goes home.

Instructors Mike Healy and Jeff Daniels:
Mike Healy has been a member of the Rockland County fire service for 54 years, serving with the Blauvelt Fire Department for 14 years, followed by the Central Nyack Fire Department for 40 years. He has served as a chief for three terms. Healy is currently the coordinator of education for the Rockland County Fire Training Center. He is a former New York state fire instructor. Healyhas worked with NYSAFC for over 20 years, serving as an instructor in the Hands-On Training program and in numerous classroom-based programs. In 2012, after retiring from the NYCTA as clinical director of the counseling unit, he partnered with the National Volunteer Fire Council to reach out to firefighters throughout the country suffering from behavioral health issues in an attempt to prevent firefighter suicides. In 2000, Healy started teaching the “Short-Handed Firefighting” class with Bob LaGrow after Andy Fredericks became too busy to continue to add it to his incredible engine company classes. We lost Andy on September 11, 2001, but we continue to memorialize this great fire educator in every class presented. Jeff Daniels is a 23-year fire service veteran and is both a career and volunteer firefighter. He served with the Air National Guard as a crash rescue firefighter for 17 years and was a member of the West Haverstraw Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years. In 2002, Daniels was hired as a New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs (NYS DMNA) firefighter and served for over four years before being appointed to the Fire Department City of New York (FDNY). He was assigned to Ladder Co. 39 in the Bronx for 12 years before becoming an instructor for the FDNY Fire Academy teaching probie school. Currently, Daniels is a member of Squad 61 in the Bronx. He also teaches at the Rockland County Fire Training Center. Daniels has been working with NYSAFC since 2015 as a Hands-On Training instructor.
