Lectures:

“Firefighter PPE Water Survival”
Instructor: Chief Curtis Wicks, Stony Point F.D.

This seminar will review how to stay afloat if a firefighter falls into a pool, flooded basement, river, or ocean while in firefighting gear. The program is designed for interior and exterior firefighters. Students will discuss scenarios and review rescue tactics and self-rescue techniques.

“Firefighter CPR”
Instructors: Lieutenant Gary Benedict, FDNY EMS and Paramedic Petros Mestheneas, Lawrence Cedarhurst F.D.

Have you ever needed to perform CPR on a firefighter in full PPE? Hopefully, you never will! This seminar will review the fastest and safest way to remove all PPE from a firefighter who is in cardiac arrest while simultaneously performing CPR. Note: firefighters will not be trained in CPR. CPR certification is not required to participate.

Hands-On Training:

“Firefighter PPE Water Survival”
This program will demonstrate how firefighters can stay afloat in their gear and how to remove their gear for self-rescue in various scenarios. Training will be conducted in full PPE with SCBA while breathing air and in firefighting gear without SCBA. Different techniques for removing a firefighter from the water using ladders, fire hose, and ropes will be shown. PPE Requirements: Each student must bring his/her own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls) and a full SCBA cylinder. The SCBA will be provided. Also bring a change of clothes and towel.

“Firefighter CPR”
This program will demonstrate how to quickly remove a firefighter donned in gear that is in cardiac arrest while simultaneously maintaining CPR. All students will participate, filling different positions to complete this scenario. Training will be done in full PPE, simulating removal of a firefighter in cardiac arrest. PPE Requirements: Each student must bring his/her own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls). Each participating department must bring at least one SCBA with a spare bottle.
